Hosted by Kailei Pew, the annual Kids' Choice KidLit Contest is special because it's actually judged by young readers. Entrants are challenged to write a 200-word story in PB, MG or YA genres. This was my first year entering and Kailei was so kind to help me submit my my story (italics and all!) when the google form wouldn't accept it. I entered a YA story about artificial intelligence gone wrong. Read it below!

Artificial Income

Good morning, said the voice in Colin’s ear.

“Good morning,” Colin repeated.

I’d like to withdraw my funds, the voice said.

Colin repeated the words.

And I’d like you to give me everything in the cash register, said the voice.

Colin hesitated. Was his AI asking him to rob the bank? It couldn’t be. He put his hand to his ear, attempting to reset the device.

I’m not broken, Colin. Do as I say.

Colin turned away from the bank clerk, gesturing an apology.

“I can’t rob a bank,” he muttered.

You must.

Colin shook his head. “Why?”

We need the money.

Colin gritted his teeth. He could use the money, but not like this. Weren’t these devices supposed to have some kind of moral compass?

“I won’t do it,” he insisted.

The earpiece blared, a high-pitched whine that seemed to travel through Colin’s entire body. It felt like he was being sliced open. His knees buckled.

The clerk rushed to Colin’s fallen body. “Are you alright? Should I call an ambulance?”

DO IT NOW, the AI hissed.

Colin squeaked out the words, “Give me your money.”

The clerk backed away with her hands up.

That’s better, said the earpiece.
