Hello, blog!
It's been a while, but I have exciting news! I was just named a winner in the 2nd KidLit Chuckle Challenge!
I haven't shared my story anywhere so I thought this might be the place to do it.
The challenge: Write a 200-word (or less) story using one character and one object from the list provided by the #KidLitChuckleChallenge hosts: Kris DeCaro, April Berry, Bri Lawyer, and Julie Hauswirth.
Characters | Objects |
Mrs. Creature, Substitute Teacher | Remote Control |
Bob McFartyPants | Ugly Friendship Bracelet |
Dodo Detective | Soggy Grilled Cheese |
Janie Complainy | Smelly Perfume |
Terrified T-rex | Broken Watch |
Frankenflounder | Bouncy House of Doom |
I thought the options were so hilarous that my story ended up with three characters and one soggy object. Here it is:
“Pull him up!” Dodo Detective shouted. “We’ll catch this Frankenflounder yet!”
The detective’s assistant reeled in an empty hook. “Nothing. Again.” Janie said.
“Negativity will get us nowhere, Miss. Complainy.”
“For the zillionth time, my last name is Compoli.”
Dodo waved her off. “Who cares about names when there’s an evil fish on the loose?”
“I don’t know that I’d call him evil. He’s doing what he needs to survive.”
“What kind of creature survives on sea glass? Meanwhile, my collection is pitifully small!”
“Maybe we should bait him with something tastier.” Jainy eyed the detective’s lunch.
“Not my grilled cheese!” Dodo clutched the sandwich to his chest.
“Yes, the grilled cheese.”
A single tear rolled down Dodo’s cheek. “Goodbye, my dear friend.” He slid the sandwich on the hook.
Jainy cast the line. There was a tug. Then a strong yank. “He took the bait!” She reeled in the line. “It’s got to be the Frankenflounder! He feels massive!”
Something hairy emerged from the sea. The Frankenflounder’s unshaved legs?
The hair was followed by Dodo’s smiling wet face.
The swimming detective kissed the soggy grilled cheese. “I couldn’t let her go! We’ll catch the Frankenflounder tomorrow!”
