I had so much fun creating this entry for the 2022 Fall Writing Frenzy. There were lots of great pictures to choose from and 200 words goes by fast!
Thank you Kaitlyn Leann Sanchez, Lydia Lukidis and Alyssa Reynoso-Morris for your time and effort putting together this fun, inspiring contest. And thank you to my critique partners for their suggestions!

THE RED LIGHT
194 words
What does a white light mean, mama?
We hang white lights when a child is born.
Your father hung a white light for you six years ago.
I miss him.
What does a green light mean, mama?
We hang green lights to say we have company.
Remember when Auntie Kath visited?
She’s in a safer place now.
What does a purple light mean, mama?
We hang purple lights when we’re looking for peace.
But quiet nights are scarce these days.
What do the orange lights mean, mama?
Orange lights ask for help.
Don’t fall behind now, dear.
Walk beside me.
What do the pink lights mean, mama?
Pink lights mean someone is sick.
Or hurt.
Come close, sweet one.
What do the blue lights mean, mama?
Blue lights mean a loved one has passed.
Let’s walk a little faster now, my love.
What does the red light mean, mama?
Don’t worry about red lights, little one.
The lights won’t turn red until you’re tucked away dreaming.
But mama, I see a red one right there.
No, dear. It must be a pink light.
It’s red. Look!
Hold my hand, darling.
Red lights mean run.
Oh. So good. Kids and their questions...am I right?? I chose this picture, too, but our stories couldn't be more different! Great work. @mowrex (Twitter)
